Munich’s Hierl Architekten and LEICHT bring Paulaner back to its new old home

Germany’s second largest export brewery, the Munich Paulaner brewery, will move. In 2018, the traditional brewery will relocate its production facilities from the Nockherberg hill to the Langwied suburb on the outskirts. But this doesn’t mean that the Nockherberg will turn into a „beer-free“ zone: It will still be home to the annual Starkbierfest (stout festival) and the Paulaner headquarters, which will be located where they used to be a long time ago: in the old Zacherl’sche brewery at the bottom of the Nockherberg.

The listed Zacherl’sche brewery was the predecessor of the Paulaner brewery. This is where the first imperially patented Salvator stout beer was brewed. During the Second World War, the neoclassical building constructed in 1822 was severely damaged; only the vaults and the façade facing the Ohlmüllerstraße and Falkenstraße survived. For the conversion and expansion of the Zacherl building to the Paulaner headquarters, the Bayerische Hausbau GmbH & Co. KG decided to organize a competition in spring 2013 for the realization of the project. The Munich Hierl Architekten BDA DWB ranked first and took the LEICHT experts on board for structural planning.

The winning draft plans to restore the listed ruins, partly reconstruct them with the original features and to integrate them into a modern extension, flooded with light, featuring a façade made of polished white concrete, architectural bronze and printed glass. Inside the 8,000 square meter rectangular ensemble of tradition and modernity, there will be an interior courtyard covered with ETFE sheets. The icing on the cake for the former and new Paulaner home is the adding of one story with a flat-topped roof.

„I consider this to be an honest solution,“ says Dr. Stefan Schmale, Commercial Director at Paulaner. „It’s back to the roots for us while at the same time we are constructing state-of-the-art headquarters (…). The draft presented by the Hierl Architekten (…) integrates the Zacherl building without denying its past as a ruin“. Christian Ude, Mayor of Munich and member of the jury, expressed his satisfaction: „This draft distinctly reflects the history of the brewery“.

LEICHT designs the stage setting for „Onkel Präsident“ [Uncle President]

In our newsletters, we usually invite you to take a look behind the scenes of exciting construction projects and to find out what’s behind the façade, in the façade or around the façade. Today, however, we direct your attention to the setting – more precisely: to the setting of the comic opera „Onkel Präsident“ by Friedrich Cerha which just premiered and is the product of a commission of the State Theatre at the Gärtnerplatz in Munich and a following co-production with the Volksoper in Vienna.

Johannes Leiacker from Landshut (Bavaria, Germany)designed the stage setting. He has designed stage settings and costumes for the world’s leading opera houses, amongst others, in Hamburg, London, Madrid, Paris and Tokyo, for the Vienna State Opera, the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre, the Los Angeles Opera and the New York Metropolitan Opera. The two-time „Opernwelt“ stage designer of the year won the Lawrence Olivier Award in the „Best New Opera Production“ category in 2010 for „Tristan and Isolde“ at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London.

Not only for this very reason was it an honor and pleasure for LEICHT to provide the structural planning for the 8 meter high, accessible „Onkel Präsident“ stage setting.
Due to the current renovation of the Gärtnerplatz Theatre, the play is currently being performed at the Residence Theatre in Munich.

Grâce aux architectes munichois Hierl Architekten et à LEICHT, Paulaner est de retour dans ses vieux murs remis à neuf.

Le Munichois Paulaner, la deuxième brasserie exportatrice d’Allemagne, déménage. En 2018 la brasserie traditionnelle va déplacer sa production du quartier de Nockherberg vers Langwied, en bordure d’agglomération. Cela ne veut pas dire que le Nockherberg deviendra zone sans bière : d’un côté, il lui reste la fête annuelle « de la bière forte » et de l’autre, le siège Paulaner. Elle réemménage là d’où elle vient : dans l’ancienne brasserie « Zacherl’sche » au pied du Nockherberg.

La brasserie Zacherl’sche, monument historique, était à l’origine de la brasserie Paulaner. C’est ici que fut brassée la première Salvator, reconnue par l’empereur. Du bâtiment de type classique construit en 1822 et très abîmé pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il n’est resté que les voûtes de la cave et la façade donnant sur les Ohlmüller- et Falkenstrasse. Pour la transformation et l’agrandissement du bâtiment d’origine en un siège administratif pour Paulaner, la « Bayerische Hausbau & Co. KG » a offert au printemps 2013 une récompense dans le cadre d’un concours. La première place a été attribuée aux Munichois Hierl Architekten BDA DWB, qui ont fait appel aux experts de LEICHT pour la conception de la structure.

Le projet du lauréat prévoit de restaurer les ruines protégées au titre des monuments historiques, de les reconstruire en partie, fidèles à l’original, et de les intégrer dans une construction moderne, lumineuse, avec une façade en béton frotté blanc, bronze et verre imprimé.

À l’intérieur des 8 000 m² de l’ensemble de forme rectangulaire, mélange de tradition et de moderne, se révèle une cour intérieure couverte de membranes ETFE. Et sur la nouvelle maison Paulaner, ancienne et nouvelle à la fois, un dernier étage en terrasse.

« Je considère ceci comme une solution honnête », exprime Dr Stefan Schmale, le dirigeant de Paulaner.  « Nous revenons à nos racines et en même temps construisons un siège administratif extrêmement moderne (…). Le projet de Hierl Architekten (…) a intégré le bâtiment original du Zacherl sans renier son passé de ruine. »

Christian Ude, le maire de Munich, capitale du Land de Bavière, et membre du jury est également satisfait : « Ce projet donne une visibilité à l’histoire de la brasserie ».

D’habitude nous invitons dans la newsletter nos lecteurs à jeter un œil derrière les coulisses de projets de construction passionnants et à trouver ce qu’il y a derrière la façade, dans la façade ou bien tout autour de celle-ci. Aujourd’hui au contraire, nous orientons votre regard sur le décor – et plus exactement : sur le décor de théâtre de l’opéra-comique « Onkel Präsident » (l’oncle président) de Friedrich Cerha, qui vient d’être présenté pour la première fois après avoir été créé en coproduction avec le Volksoper de Vienne sur la commande du Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz de Munich.

Le décor de théâtre est une création de Johannes Leiacker de Landshut (Bavière, Allemagne). Johannes Leiacker a créé des décors de théâtre et des costumes pour les plus grands opéras de la planète : entre autres Hambourg, Londres, Madrid, Paris et Tokyo, le Wiener Staatssoper, le Los Angeles Opera et le New Yorker Metropolitan Opera. Celui qui déjà deux fois fut nommé par « Opernwelt » créateur de scène de l’année reçut en 2010 le Lawrence-Olivier-Award dans la catégorie « Best New Opera Production » pour Tristan et Iseult au Londoner Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

Pour toutes ces raisons et plus encore, c’était un honneur et un plaisir pour LEICHT de concevoir pour Johannes Leiacker la structure porteuse de la scène de 8 m de haut de « Onkel Präsident ».
